Obi condoles Okonjo-Iweala over younger brother’s death

Former Anambra State Governor and Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi has expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, following the passing of her younger brother, Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo.

Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo, a member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State, died on May 30, 2026.

His death was announced on Sunday by the Palace Secretary, Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi.

The Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, His Royal Majesty Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, described the late prince as a devoted husband, loving father, cherished brother and dedicated uncle whose passing had created a deep void in both the royal family and the kingdom.

The monarch said Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo was “a proud and irreplaceable member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family, whose roots run deep in the history, dignity and tradition of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom.”

In a condolence message shared via his official social media platform, Obi offered words of comfort to the former Nigerian Minister of Finance, noting that losing a younger sibling is an “arduous and grievous experience”.

Addressing the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Obi wrote: “My dearest sister Ngozi, it is with profound sorrow that I received the sad news of the demise of Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo, your younger brother.”

The former governor conveyed his condolences not only to Okonjo-Iweala but also to the royal family of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom and all those who knew and cherished the deceased prince.

“Please accept my sincerest sympathies, extended to you, the esteemed royal family of the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, and all individuals who held Prince Ikechukwu in their affections,” Obi stated.

“May God Almighty who called him home grant him eternal rest in His kingdom, and grant your family the fortitude to bear his irreplaceable loss.

“God Almighty bless your family always” he added.
