The federal legislator, Aliyu Misau, attributed his decision to defect to APM to the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP, which, he said, had hindered him from effectively representing his constituency.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday recorded another loss in the House of Representatives as Aliyu Misau, who represents the Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, formally moved to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Mr Misau’s resignation was communicated in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, and was subsequently read during plenary on Wednesday.
In the correspondence, the federal legislator attributed his decision to the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, which he said had made it difficult for him to effectively represent his constituents and contribute to development efforts.
In part, his letter: “I would like to thank the PDP for the opportunity given to me to serve the good people of Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency. The leadership crisis in the PDP has made it impossible for me to continue to represent my people and contribute to the development of the constituency.”
His defection is being linked to the wider political realignment in Bauchi State following the departure of Governor Bala Mohammed from the PDP to the APM. Since that shift, several political office holders and party loyalists in the state have also either crossed over or indicated willingness to do so.
The development adds to growing pressure on the PDP in the House of Representatives, where it continues to lose members amid sustained internal disagreements and factional disputes.
These internal fractures have already triggered a series of defections by elected officials and key members, raising questions about the party’s ability to maintain cohesion ahead of future elections.
With Mr Misau’s move, the APM further consolidates its presence in Bauchi State, benefiting from a steady inflow of politicians and elected representatives formerly aligned with the PDP.
