Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has recounted an unexpected encounter he had with former Anambra State governor Peter Obi during a church service.
He shared the story during an interview with Chude Jideonwo while discussing politics, elections, and some of his interactions with prominent Nigerian leaders.
According to him, the incident occurred during a Holy Communion service at church, where worshippers had gathered to participate in the sacrament.
He said: “Peter Obi knelt beside me in church during Holy Communion and I didn’t know it was him.”
He explained that he was already kneeling for communion when he suddenly realized that Obi was positioned directly beside him. He was surprised to discover who was kneeling next to him and decided to address an issue that had been on his mind.
The former governor stated that he reminded Obi of the importance of truthfulness, particularly during a sacred religious exercise such as Holy Communion.
Amaechi claimed that he challenged Obi over statements relating to an election, insisting that honesty is a key requirement for anyone participating in the sacrament.
According to him, he went as far as telling Obi that if he could swear at that moment that Amaechi had not won the election in question, he would resign.
The politician used the story to illustrate the intensity of political disagreements in Nigeria and how such differences can sometimes extend beyond political arenas into everyday encounters.
