Peter Obi Promises Key Governance Role for Kwankwaso, Says VP Position Will Be Active

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has assured Nigerians that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso will play a significant role in government if their ticket emerges victorious in the 2027 presidential election.

Obi made the declaration while accepting his nomination as the party’s presidential candidate and formally unveiling Kwankwaso as his running mate ahead of the next general election. According to him, his administration would move away from the traditional style where vice presidents are often sidelined from major decision-making processes.

Speaking at the party’s convention in Abuja, Obi stated that the office of the Vice President under his leadership would be fully involved in governance and national development. He stressed that Kwankwaso would serve as a partner in government rather than occupying a ceremonial position.

“The Vice President will not be a spare tyre. We will work together as partners committed to building a better Nigeria,” Obi said while addressing party delegates and supporters.

The former Anambra State governor explained that his vision for the country is built on inclusion, accountability, transparency, and shared responsibility among leaders. He noted that Nigeria requires a leadership structure where key officials actively contribute to governance and policy implementation.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and one of the country’s influential northern politicians, was officially announced as Obi’s running mate during the event. Their alliance is already generating discussions across the political landscape, with analysts viewing the partnership as a strategic effort to strengthen opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi also used the occasion to outline his plans for economic reforms, improved security, and stronger democratic institutions. He maintained that his administration would prioritize national unity and create opportunities for citizens regardless of ethnic, religious, or political background.

As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the next election cycle, the Obi-Kwankwaso partnership is expected to remain a major topic of discussion among voters, party stakeholders, and political observers across the country.
