The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed reports of a suspected kidnapping at Phase 1 Primary School in Gbagalape, Abuja, describing the incident as a false alarm and urging residents to remain calm.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning when panic broke out at the school after some pupils suddenly began shouting “kidnappers” and ran out of the premises, causing fear among teachers, parents, and residents in the surrounding area.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said officers swiftly responded to a distress call alleging that kidnappers had invaded the school.
According to her, the Nyanya Divisional Police Officer immediately deployed police personnel and surveillance teams to the school following the report, which was received at about 10:30 a.m.
“Upon receiving the information, the Divisional Police Officer, Nyanya Division, promptly mobilised officers and surveillance teams to the scene to assess the situation and ensure the safety of students and staff,” Adeh stated.
She explained that preliminary findings revealed that the panic was triggered by a group of pupils who suddenly raised an alarm and fled the school compound, prompting others to do the same.
The development led security operatives to secure the area and conduct an extensive search of the school premises and its surroundings.
Following a thorough investigation, police found no evidence of any kidnapping attempt or security breach.
“After extensive searches and questioning of persons within and around the school, no kidnapping incident was confirmed. No suspect was seen, and no victim was identified,” the police spokesperson said.
Adeh added that officers also combed nearby hills, boundaries, and adjoining locations as part of precautionary measures. Security teams further visited neighbouring schools to ensure there was no threat to students or staff.
The FCT Police Command reassured the public that the situation was under control and urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic and tension within communities.
The Command also encouraged citizens to report suspicious movements, security concerns, or emergencies through the nearest police station or the Command’s emergency communication channels.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, reiterated the importance of timely and accurate reporting of security incidents, stressing that public cooperation remains vital in maintaining safety across the Federal Capital Territory.
