Police Warn Politicians After Violent Nasarawa Political Clash

The Nasarawa State Police Command has warned politicians, their supporters and political groups against conducting illegal campaigns after a violent clash between supporters of rival political office seekers.

The warning followed the unrest, which the command said disrupted public peace, destruction of property, vandalism of campaign billboards and damage to vehicles belonging to innocent residents in parts of the state.

In a statement signed by the command spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Mohammed, has cautioned political actors against organising rallies, processions and other campaign activities in violation of the Electoral Act.

Citing Section 98 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, Mohammed warned that violation of the act will be met by the full weight of the law.

He said, “The Command notes that Section 98 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, stipulates that political campaigns shall commence not earlier than one hundred and fifty (150) days before polling day and shall end twenty-four (24) hours prior to the day of the election.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains neutral and committed to providing a level playing field for all political actors while ensuring the protection of lives and property.”

Mohammed consequently directed all political parties, aspirants, support groups and their agents to strictly comply with the Electoral Act governing the commencement and conduct of campaigns, rallies, meetings, processions and related political activities.

He further warned that anyone found violating the Electoral Act, sponsoring political thugs, participating in unlawful political activities or engaging in acts capable of causing a breach of public peace would face arrest and prosecution.

Mohammed continued, “Any individual, group, or political organisation found violating the provisions of the Electoral Act, engaging in unlawful political activities, sponsoring thugs, participating in acts capable of causing a breach of the peace, or disrupting public order will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

The command further appealed to parents, guardians, community leaders and political stakeholders to caution their wards and supporters against violence, hooliganism, political intolerance and other actions capable of undermining peace and security across the state.

“The Command will not hesitate to deploy all lawful measures to maintain public order and safeguard residents from intimidation, harassment, or any form of disturbance” he added.
