Kaduna, Nigeria — At least eight Nigerian soldiers have reportedly been killed in an ambush by suspected repentant bandits in Kaduna State, in an incident that has sparked renewed concerns about the effectiveness of rehabilitation and reconciliation initiatives involving armed groups in the North-West.
According to reports, the troops were attacked while carrying out a security operation in a bandit-prone area of the state. The assailants allegedly launched a surprise assault on the military personnel, leading to the deaths of eight soldiers and leaving several others injured.
Sources familiar with the incident disclosed that the attackers were believed to be members of a group previously associated with ongoing peace and rehabilitation efforts aimed at persuading bandits to surrender their weapons and embrace lawful activities.
As news of the attack spread, families of some of the fallen soldiers were reportedly left waiting for official communication from military authorities.
