Robertson joins Tottenham from Liverpool on free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer following his departure from Liverpool.

The experienced left-back will officially join Spurs on July 1 after the expiration of his contract, ending a trophy-laden seven-year spell at Anfield.

Robertson had earlier confirmed that he would leave Liverpool this summer, allowing Tottenham to secure the 32-year-old without paying a transfer fee.

The move comes months after Spurs failed in an attempt to sign the defender during the January transfer window.

At the time, an agreement had reportedly been reached between the clubs, but Liverpool pulled out of the deal after failing to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.

Tottenham eventually returned for the Scotland international and completed the deal as manager Roberto De Zerbi continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new season.

Welcoming Robertson to North London, De Zerbi praised the defender’s experience, leadership qualities and winning mentality.

De Zerbi said: “Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team.

“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.”

Robertson leaves Liverpool as one of the most successful full-backs in the club’s recent history.

Since joining from Hull City in 2017, he made 378 appearances and helped the Reds win two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, two League Cups and the FA Cup.

The defender remains a key player for Scotland and is expected to captain his country at this summer’s World Cup, adding to his 92 international appearances.

Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange also welcomed the signing, describing Robertson as a player with the qualities needed to strengthen the squad.

Lange said: “His quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for – and won – major honours.

“Andy’s professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club.”

Robertson becomes one of Tottenham’s first major additions of the summer transfer window as the club looks to build on its Premier League survival and move up the table under De Zerbi
