Senate Orders Crackdown on Bandits Flaunting Wealth on TikTok, Social Media

The Senate has called on security agencies to urgently track and arrest bandits and terrorists allegedly using TikTok and other social media platforms to flaunt cash, show off criminal activities and project influence.

The resolution was made during plenary on Thursday, June 11, 2026, following concerns over the rising wave of bandit attacks and terrorist incursions in Kogi West and other parts of the country.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raised alarm that some armed groups were no longer hiding but openly using social media to display wealth believed to be proceeds of crime.

According to her, some bandits allegedly conducted a giveaway of over ₦100 million within 30 minutes through their social media handles, especially TikTok.

She urged the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre and other relevant security agencies to track, monitor and arrest those using online platforms to publicise criminal operations.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also condemned the development, describing it as a direct challenge to government authority and a dangerous show of impunity.

He said security agencies must treat the matter as an urgent national security threat and report back once arrests and prosecutions are made.
