Trump calls off planned strikes on Iran, says talks have reached a breakthrough

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he has cancelled planned military strikes against Iran, claiming that high-level discussions involving Iran and several regional stakeholders had led to a breakthrough.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said talks with Iran had been elevated to the country’s highest leadership levels and had received approval, prompting the cancellation of strikes and bombings that were scheduled for later in the day.

He claimed that the discussions and final points had been approved “in both concept and great detail” by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt, among others.
Trump added that a naval blockade would remain in force until the proposed arrangement was finalised. He said details regarding the time and location of a formal signing would be announced shortly.

The announcement came just hours after Trump threatened major military action against Iran, saying the United States would strike the country “very hard” and suggesting that key Iranian oil infrastructure could eventually come under US control.

In an earlier Truth Social post, Trump claimed that Iran’s navy, air force, radar systems, air defence networks and much of its offensive military capability had been severely degraded. He also said the United States would be “hitting Iran very hard tonight.”

Trump further warned that the US could take control of Kharg Island and other strategic energy facilities, while also assuming control of Iran’s oil and gas markets.

In a separate development, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that “wrong strategies and impulsive decisions” would worsen the crisis, damage energy infrastructure and disrupt global markets.

In a statement posted on X, Ghalibaf said such actions would “reset the entire board for the worse” and leave those responsible trapped in an “endless quagmire” for years.

He also issued a warning to Iran’s adversaries, saying: “You will see a different Iran.”

The latest developments come amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, with concerns growing over the potential impact of any escalation on regional stability and global energy supplies.

Wrong strategies and impulsive decisions will reset the entire board for the worse, explode energy infrastructure and markets and create an endless quagmire that you will be stuck in for years.
