Tinubu receives new Béninoise President Wadagni

President Bola Tinubu on Monday, received the new President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, in Lagos.

This was confirmed in a statement from the Presidency and issued to State House correspondents.

Tinubu received the Béninoise leader at his Ikoyi residence.

It is Wadagni’s first bilateral engagement with his Nigerian counterpart since taking office a week ago.

Wadagni, who was received on arrival by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and led to the President’s residence, held a closed-door meeting with Tinubu that lasted nearly 30 minutes.

The details of the discussions were not immediately made public.

Wadagni’s visit comes days after his inauguration on May 24, 2026, when he succeeded President Patrice Talon following his victory in the April 12 presidential election.

Vice President Kashim Shettima had represented Tinubu at the inauguration ceremony.

Benin Republic, which shares a western border with Nigeria, is one of Nigeria’s closest neighbours and a key partner in ECOWAS regional cooperation, trade and security arrangements in the Gulf of Guinea.
