UK Defence Deputy Chief Visits Maiduguri to Deepen Military Partnership with Nigeria

Maiduguri, Nigeria — The United Kingdom’s Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Military Strategy and Operations), Lieutenant General Sir Charlie Collins, has visited Maiduguri, Borno State, in a move aimed at strengthening military cooperation and enhancing security collaboration between the UK and Nigeria.

The high-level visit underscores the longstanding defence partnership between both countries and comes amid ongoing efforts to tackle insurgency and other security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East region.

During his visit, Lt. Gen. Collins met with senior military commanders of Operation HADIN KAI, the Nigerian military operation leading the fight against terrorism in the North-East. He was received by top Nigerian Army officials and participated in strategic discussions focused on counter-terrorism operations, military capacity building, and regional security.

The British defence official also observed military training activities conducted under the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT), which has been working with Nigerian security forces to improve operational effectiveness, leadership skills, and combat readiness.

Speaking during the engagement, military officials emphasized the importance of international partnerships in addressing evolving security threats. They noted that cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom has continued to grow through intelligence sharing, specialized training programmes, and advisory support.

The visit provided an opportunity for both countries to review ongoing defence initiatives and explore additional areas of collaboration aimed at enhancing peace and stability in the region.
