Undav double sends Germany into World Cup knockouts against wasteful ivroy Coast

Germany have booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after substitute Deniz Undav scored twice in a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast.

The four-time world champions looked set for a frustrating evening after falling behindý-g in the first half, but Undav once again proved decisive from the bench as Julian Nagelsmann’s side maintained their perfect start to the tournament.

The victory follows Germany’s emphatic 7-1 win over Curacao in their opening match and guarantees their progression from Group E with a game to spare.

Kessie puts Ivory Coast in control

Ivory Coast made life difficult for Germany and took a deserved lead in the 30th minute through captain Franck Kessie.

The African side defended resolutely and threatened to claim a valuable result as Germany struggled to create clear-cut opportunities despite dominating possession.

With time running out, Nagelsmann turned to his substitutes in search of inspiration, introducing Undav and Nadiem Amiri to inject fresh energy into the attack.

Undav changes the game

The tactical switch paid off in the 68th minute when Amiri delivered a cross into the box and Undav applied a composed finish to bring Germany level.

The equaliser shifted things in Germany’s favour as Ivory Coast were forced deeper into their own half in an attempt to protect a point.

Just when the match appeared to be heading for a draw, Undav struck again in stoppage time. Winger forward found the decisive goal in the 94th minute to complete Germany’s comeback and seal all three points.

The result leaves Germany on six points from two matches and safely through to the round of 32, while Ivory Coast will need a positive result in their final group fixture against Curacao to keep their qualification hopes alive.
