A parent whose daughter studies at the school has defended the surveillance system, saying it was introduced with parents’ approval to address serious disciplinary and safety concerns.

In an anonymous message on Facebook, the parent revealed that her daughter was among the students injured during the tragedy and remains deeply traumatised by the incident.

The parent said CCTV cameras were installed in the dormitories after students repeatedly reported theft, bullying, and other misconduct that required closer monitoring. According to the message, parents supported the move in the interest of improving safety within the boarding facilities.

She further alleged that some of the reported incidents involved older students mistreating younger learners in the shower areas, including inappropriate behaviour that left some girls feeling uncomfortable and vulnerable.

The parent claimed that students had informed her that CCTV footage often revealed suspicious activity, particularly in areas where towels or other items were used to conceal sections of the dormitories from the cameras. She alleged that such behaviour raised concerns about what was happening in those spaces.

The comments come as CCTV footage from the school has become a key part of investigations into the dormitory fire that killed 16 students and left dozens injured. Detectives have reportedly relied on surveillance footage to identify suspects linked to the incident.

The use of CCTV cameras in student dormitories has since sparked a national debate, with some Kenyans arguing that the systems enhance security and accountability. In contrast, others have questioned whether they infringe on students’ privacy rights.

As investigations continue, the controversy has highlighted the difficult balance schools face between ensuring student safety and protecting personal privacy.
