When a Good Name Speaks: How Sikiru Ayinde Barrister’s Legacy Came to the Rescue at the Airport

The enduring legacy of the late Fuji music icon, Aare (Dr.) Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, was recently highlighted through an unexpected act of goodwill at an airport following the successful conclusion of BarryFest 2026.

According to a personal account shared by writer Laide Olawumi, the Vice Chairperson of BarryFest encountered a challenge while preparing to return to the United States after attending the annual festival held in honour of the legendary musician.

The official reportedly discovered that her luggage exceeded the airline’s approved weight limit by a significant margin, resulting in excess baggage charges amounting to several hundreds of thousands of naira.

Faced with the difficult choice of paying the hefty fee or leaving some items behind, she opted to remove several materials from her luggage, including BarryFest programmes and souvenirs intended for members of the organisation abroad who were unable to attend the event.

As she sorted through the items, an airport supervisor noticed one of the BarryFest programmes and inquired about it.

“Isn’t that Barrister?” the supervisor reportedly asked.

After confirming that she had travelled to Nigeria specifically for the festival celebrating the life and contributions of the Fuji music pioneer, the supervisor’s attitude reportedly changed.

Moved by the significance of the event and the mention of Barrister’s name, the airport official offered assistance and helped find a solution that spared her from paying the substantial excess baggage charges.

What initially appeared to be a frustrating travel experience ultimately became a memorable reminder of the goodwill and respect that Barrister’s name continues to command years after his passing.

Observers say the incident underscores the lasting impact of the late musician, whose contributions to the growth of Fuji music and his influence on society continue to resonate with admirers both within and outside Nigeria.

Sixteen years after his death, Barrister’s legacy remains a source of inspiration, opening doors and creating positive experiences for those associated with his memory.

The incident has also been cited as a testament to the value of building a good reputation, with many describing it as proof that a good name can remain a powerful asset long after a person’s lifetime.

BarryFest 2026, which celebrated the life and achievements of the Fuji legend, attracted fans, associates and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and abroad. The event concluded with renewed calls for the preservation and promotion of Barrister’s rich musical and cultural heritage.
