First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for renewed commitment to ending child labour, urging governments, families, communities and relevant stakeholders to protect the rights, dignity and future of every child.
Tinubu made the call on Friday,12 June 2026, in her message marking the World Day Against Child Labour, themed: “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults.”
The First Lady said the global observance presents an opportunity to reaffirm collective resolve to ensure that children are protected from exploitation and provided with the enabling environment to learn, grow and realise their full potential.
“The World Day Against Child Labour 2026, with the theme ‘Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults,’ calls on us to reaffirm our commitment to protecting every child’s right to safety, education, dignity and well-being,” she said.
She stressed that no child should be deprived of education, care and opportunities because of forced labour, noting that every child deserves a childhood defined by learning, development and hope.
“No child should be denied the opportunity to learn, grow and achieve their dreams because they are subjected to forced labour,” the First Lady stated.
According to her, children belong in homes, classrooms, playgrounds and other safe spaces where they can develop into responsible and productive members of society.
Tinubu, therefore, called for increased investment in child welfare programmes and initiatives that strengthen families and empower communities to adequately cater for children.
“I urge us to continue to invest in the well-being of our children and create opportunities that empower families and communities to take care of them,” she said.
Furthermore, the First Lady appealed to Nigerians to join the global campaign against child labour, stressing that collective action remains critical to securing a brighter future for children.
“Let us all raise a red card against child labour and work together for a fairer and a promising future for every child,” she added.
