Demands ₦500,000 From Wife
A man, Ahmad Tijani, on Tuesday demanded a ₦500,000 settlement from his wife, Firdausi Shu’aibu, in a divorce suit filed before the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court in Kaduna.
Shu’aibu had approached the court seeking dissolution of the marriage through Khul’i, an Islamic form of divorce where a wife returns the dowry paid by her husband in exchange for the dissolution of the marriage.
She told the court that the dowry paid by Tijani was ₦80,000 and expressed readiness to refund the full amount.
“The dowry is ₦80,000, and I am willing to pay back the money in full,” she said.
However, Tijani asked the court for time to discuss the matter with family elders.
He said if the matter could not be resolved within the period, he would only accept ₦500,000 from his wife, arguing that the original dowry would not be sufficient for him to remarry.
“If we don’t settle during this period, I can only accept ₦500,000 from her because ₦80,000 would not be enough for me to remarry in this economy,” he said.
The judge, Mu’awiyya Shehu, asked Shu’aibu whether she agreed with her husband’s demand.
She rejected the request, insisting that she could only return the exact dowry paid by him.
“No, I can only return the exact dowry he paid,” she told the court.
The judge adjourned the matter until July 30 for hearing on Tijani’s reason for demanding ₦500,000 instead of the original ₦80,000 dowry.
