Antoine Griezmann (born 21 March 1991) is a French footballer who plays as a forward or attacking midfielder for Atlético Madrid in La Liga. He is set to join Orlando City in Major League Soccer on 13 July 2026. Widely regarded as one of the top players of his generation, Griezmann is known for his versatility, intelligence on the field, attacking skills, and movement without the ball.
Griezmann started his senior career with Real Sociedad in 2009, after coming up through their youth system, and helped the team win the Segunda División in his first season. In 2014, he moved to Atlético Madrid for a club record €30 million. In his second season, he was named La Liga Best Player and played a key role in Atlético reaching the UEFA Champions League final. He also finished third for both the Ballon d’Or and Best FIFA Men’s Player awards. Two years later, he won the UEFA Europa League and was named Player of the Season. In 2019, after much speculation, he left Atlético for Barcelona in a €120 million transfer, making him one of the most expensive players ever. Biography & Early life
Antoine Griezmann was born on 21 March 1991 in Mâcon, Saône-et-Loire. His father, Alain Griezmann, is a town councillor with distant German roots, and the family name was originally spelled “Grieszmann” before being changed. His mother, Isabelle Lopes, is of Portuguese descent. Her father, Amaro Lopes, played football for Paços de Ferreira in Portugal before moving to France for work. As a child, Griezmann often spent holidays in Paços de Ferreira.
Griezmann started out with his hometown club UF Mâconnais. He went on several trials with professional teams, including Lyon, his childhood favorite, but was turned down because of his small size. In 2005, during a trial with Montpellier, he played a friendly against Paris Saint-Germain’s youth team and caught the eye of Real Sociedad’s scout, Éric Olhats. After the match, Olhats invited him for a trial in San Sebastián, which led to a youth contract offer. Although his parents were hesitant at first, they agreed to let him move to Spain after receiving positive feedback.

Although his form at Barcelona was below expectations, Griezmann’s performances for France led coach Didier Deschamps to call him “one of the greatest players of all-time”.
Personal life
Griezmann has been with Erika Choperena, who is from the Basque Country in Spain, since 2011. They married on 15 June 2017. Their first daughter was born in April 2016, their second child arrived in April 2019, and their third daughter was born in April 2021. All three children share the same birthday, 8 April, until their fourth child, Shai, was born on 15 June 2025. Griezmann is Catholic.
Griezmann’s sister survived the Bataclan theatre siege during the November 2015 Paris attacks. At the same time, Griezmann was playing for France against Germany at the Stade de France, which was also targeted in the attacks.
On 17 December 2017, Griezmann caused controversy by sharing a photo of himself dressed as a Harlem Globetrotter on his social media accounts; the outfit included blackface and an afro wig. After severe criticism, Griezmann deleted the posts and made an apology.
Griezmann’s father became the president of UF Mâconnais in 2020, the club for which Griezmann played in his youth.
In July 2021, video footage of Griezmann along with teammate Ousmane Dembélé circulated online, whereby he was seen laughing at derogatory racial comments made by Dembélé against the Japanese technicians in their hotel room. Griezmann apologised for the video on Twitter, but denied accusations of racism.
