BREAKING: ASUU Threatens to Shut Down Lagos State-Owned Universities Over 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to picket and shut down all Lagos State-owned universities over the state government’s failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU Agreement.

The decision was disclosed on Thursday by the Lagos Zone of ASUU during a press briefing held at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) in Ikorodu.

According to the union’s Lagos Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Adesola Nassir, repeated efforts to engage the Lagos State Government on the implementation of the agreement have yielded no meaningful results. He said the continued delay has left lecturers dissatisfied and has forced the union to consider industrial action.

ASUU maintained that the Lagos State Government, as the proprietor of the affected institutions, is obligated to implement the provisions of the 2025 agreement, which covers improved welfare packages, salary adjustments, and other conditions of service for academic staff.

The union warned that unless the government takes immediate steps to address its demands, members would embark on a picketing exercise that could lead to the shutdown of academic activities across the state’s universities.

The institutions expected to be affected include Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED).

ASUU emphasized that the planned action is aimed at compelling the state government to honour its commitments and prevent further deterioration of lecturers’ welfare and the quality of tertiary education in Lagos State.

The development comes amid growing industrial tensions in Nigeria’s university system, with ASUU branches in several states also expressing concerns over delays in implementing the 2025 agreement.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Government had not issued an official response to ASUU’s latest threat.
