“Court Remands Two Men” — Face Seven Charges Over Alleged Gombe Airport Invasion

A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Gombe has ordered the remand of two supporters of the African Democratic Congress over their alleged involvement in the invasion of Gombe International Airport during the arrival of the party’s governorship candidate, Dr Bala Bello Tinka

The defendants, Muhammad-Sunusi Abdullahi, popularly known as Ataka, and Ahmed-Daudu Dinawa, also known as Jadda, were arraigned on Tuesday before Chief Magistrate Aliyu Abubakar of Chief Magistrates’ Court No. 2.

They are facing a seven-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, disobedience to a lawful order issued by a public servant, obstruction of public officials in the discharge of their duties, intentional insult, inciting disturbance and mischief.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Police prosecutor Umehi Thomas told the court that the alleged offences occurred at about noon on July 15, 2026, during Tinka’s arrival at Gombe International Airport.

Thomas alleged that Abdullahi and Dinawa, acting with other persons who are currently at large, forcefully entered the airport and proceeded towards the restricted Executive Gate of the VIP section.

The prosecutor claimed that the defendants and their alleged accomplices damaged the security lock at the gate before gaining unauthorised access to the restricted area.

He further alleged that efforts by airport management and security personnel to prevent the group from entering the area were unsuccessful.

According to the prosecution, the defendants allegedly became violent and insulted officials who attempted to stop them.

Thomas informed the court that the monetary value of the damaged property would be determined as police investigations into the incident continued.

The alleged offences were said to contravene Sections 79, 342, 148, 143, 399, 114 and 326 of the Penal Code Law.

Following their not-guilty pleas, Chief Magistrate Abubakar ordered that the two defendants be remanded in police custody pending further proceedings in the case.

The other persons allegedly involved in the incident remain at large, while police investigations are continuing.

The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until found guilty by a competent court.
