The Defence Headquarters has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of retired military personnel, assuring veterans that efforts are underway to implement the recently approved salary increase and corresponding pension adjustments.
The assurance was given during a one-day strategic retreat with leaders of military veterans’ associations held in Abuja to strengthen collaboration on veterans’ welfare, unity and continued national service.
The retreat was organised by the Defence Headquarters under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, in partnership with the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers’ Association of Nigeria.
Speaking through the Chief of Defence Operations, Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, Oluyede said sustained engagement with veterans remained the most effective way to address their concerns.
He said the welfare of retired personnel remained one of the top priorities of the Defence Headquarters under his leadership.
According to him, the implementation of the recently approved salary increment and the attendant pension review is being processed through the appropriate statutory channels.
The CDS also commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his commitment to improving the welfare of officers and men of the Armed Forces.
He appealed to retired military personnel to remain patient while the necessary procedures were concluded, assuring them that the Defence Headquarters would continue to pursue better healthcare services, prompt pension payments and improved welfare packages for veterans.
Oluyede urged former service personnel to continue to uphold the values of discipline, loyalty and patriotism that defined their years in active service.
He further stressed the need for stronger collaboration among veterans’ associations, noting that retired military officers still had critical roles to play in national development.
The CDS encouraged veterans to mentor younger generations and support initiatives aimed at promoting national unity, peace and security.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, the Defence Headquarters said the retreat provided a platform for dialogue and renewed commitment to addressing issues affecting retired military personnel.
The meeting also underscored the importance of sustaining engagement between the military authorities and veterans to strengthen mutual understanding and enhance the welfare of former service members.
