“Digital Abuse And Sexual Extortion” — Court Remands 28-Year-Old Man For Allegedly Posting Partner’s Private Videos, Blackmailing Women Online

A Magistrate Court sitting in Owerri, Imo State, has remanded a 28-year-old man, Uzochukwu Ikenna Wisdom, over allegations of sexual extortion and the unlawful sharing of private videos of women on social media.

Wisdom is accused of recording young women during private moments and allegedly using the videos to threaten, blackmail or intimidate them whenever disputes arose.

According to Virgin Heart Foundation, an Owerri-based non-governmental organisation, the suspect was allegedly in the habit of making intimate videos of women without using them responsibly and later threatening the victims with the recordings.

The organisation said the matter came to light after Wisdom allegedly posted private videos of his girlfriend of two years on Facebook and TikTok, allegedly with the intention of selling the content to adult websites.

The NGO further claimed that when the suspect was arrested and his phone examined by the police, investigators allegedly found several private videos of other young women believed to be victims.

Virgin Heart Foundation said it was working with Marjorie Ezihe of Sisters With A Goal Initiative to support and stabilise the affected victim, who was said to have suffered serious emotional trauma after the videos were allegedly posted online.

The organisation said the victim, a student of Imo State University, had allegedly attempted self-harm several times following the incident.

In a statement, the NGO described digital abuse and sexual extortion as a growing weapon used by some abusive partners against victims.

“Digital abuse and sexual extortion is a weapon some abusive men devise against their victims,” the group said.

The organisation also released a video in which the victim narrated her experience and how the alleged blackmail affected her mental health.

Following the suspect’s arraignment, the Magistrate Court ordered his remand pending further proceedings.

The case has drawn attention to the growing problem of technology-enabled abuse, blackmail and the non-consensual circulation of private images, especially against women and young students.

The allegations against the suspect remain claims before the court until proven.
