Gov Uba Sani Is Running A Govt With Human Face, Says Internal Revenue Boss

The Executive Chairman of the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS), Jerry Adams, has described the administration of Governor Uba Sani as a government with a human face, saying the governor’s inclusive policies, commitment to peace and support for workers have strengthened public trust and improved tax compliance across the State.

Adams made the remarks while receiving the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, at the KADIRS headquarters, where he also commended journalists for supporting tax awareness and responsible reporting.

According to him, the governor’s people-oriented approach has been instrumental in boosting internally generated revenue (IGR) and restoring taxpayers’ confidence in government.

“Uba Sani’s government is a government with a human face. It is a government that has a human face, and that is why we want him back in 2027,” Adams said.

He added that the administration has promoted fairness, inclusivity, and peaceful coexistence across the state.

“Governor Sani is doing well. He has done a lot in terms of peacebuilding and inclusivity. People are no longer talking about segregation in religion. What people are asking for is fairness, and that is what is happening now,” he said.

Adams noted that the governor has demonstrated respect for all segments of the state, including communities in Southern Kaduna and traditional institutions.

“We have seen the governor in different Christian fora as a Muslim. Especially those of us from Southern Kaduna have seen him respect our traditional rulers,” he stated.

The KADIRS chairman also said workers in the state now enjoy greater job security under the present administration.

“For us workers, we have seen that for a long time now, every worker is not scared of being sacked or waking up with a sack letter. Job security is guaranteed in Kaduna State at the moment,” he said.

Adams attributed the significant improvement in tax compliance to visible government projects and prudent use of taxpayers’ money.

“The governor has done so much that we are able to move our compliance level from like 30-something per cent to about 80 per cent,” he said.

“It is because the governor has earned the trust of our taxpayers. They have seen the result of their taxes. The infrastructure, investments in education, healthcare and many other things the government is doing are encouraging people to pay more taxes.”

He said the administration’s policies have reduced the need for enforcement actions, stressing that the government now prioritises dialogue and compliance over punishment.

“It is not everything that is about punishment. You don’t solve a problem with a problem. Somebody may have committed an infraction, but you can ask the person to correct it, pay the necessary penalty, and continue, instead of demolishing everything,” he said.

The KADIRS boss also acknowledged Governor Sani’s support for the revenue agency since his appointment.

“We have always taken our plea to him, and he has never ceased to support us. We appreciate his political will to see that we succeed,” Adams said.

He explained that the administration inherited enormous debt obligations, making increased internally generated revenue essential for governance.

“Something had to be done. I was entrusted with the responsibility of revitalising and revolutionising the service to perform optimally, and I appreciate His Excellency for giving me that opportunity,” he said.

Adams reaffirmed his loyalty to the governor, dismissing speculations linking him to higher political office.

“I have a primary responsibility as the Executive Chairman of the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service. That is my assignment, and I am focused on doing it to the best of my ability,” he said.

“I am 100 per cent loyal to the governor. He is my boss and our leader, and anything that will make him succeed is what we will do.”

He also expressed optimism that Kaduna State could attain a monthly IGR of N20 billion if the current pace of reforms is sustained.

“Our target is N20 billion monthly. It is very ambitious, but it is doable, and by God’s grace we will work towards achieving it,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ, Kaduna State Council, Abdulgafar Alabelewe, commended Adams for the reforms introduced at KADIRS, saying they had transformed revenue generation in the State.

He said the state’s monthly internally generated revenue had increased from about N4 billion in 2023 to approximately N9 billion under Adams’ leadership.

“We have monitored the reforms that you have brought on board that are transforming the service,” Alabelewe said. “We are aware that around 2023 the internal revenue of Kaduna State was around N4 billion, and within just two to three years you have been able to bring about reforms that have skyrocketed the monthly IGR to about N9 billion.”

The NUJ chairman appealed to the KADIRs chairman for a stronger partnership with the media to deepen understanding of tax reforms and revenue generation, saying the media remained committed to supporting the state’s development efforts.

“We believe that with adequate knowledge in this regard, we will be able to contribute our quota meaningfully towards ensuring that the target of N20 billion monthly is achieved,” Alabelewe said.
