The dialogue was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Japan’s Vice Minister of Defence for International Affairs, Kano Koji. The two sides held comprehensive discussions on the regional and global security environment and exchanged views on issues of mutual strategic interest.
The officials reviewed the full spectrum of defence cooperation, including military-to-military exchanges, cooperation between the armed forces’ joint headquarters, maritime security, joint military exercises, capacity building, defence equipment and technology collaboration—including maritime technologies—and institutional engagement.
Welcoming the steady expansion of defence ties through regular high-level exchanges and dialogue mechanisms, the two sides also discussed expected outcomes from upcoming ministerial engagements, including the India-Japan 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue scheduled for later this year.
The delegations explored ways to deepen cooperation in emerging areas such as defence manufacturing, advanced technologies, cybersecurity, space and other strategic sectors.
Noting the growing convergence between the two countries on regional security issues, they reiterated their shared commitment to promoting a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific founded on respect for international law.
During his visit, Defence Secretary Singh also called on Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and extended an invitation for him to visit India at the earliest opportunity.
The meeting follows Japanese Prime Minister’s visit to India earlier this month, during which the two countries signed agreements covering energy, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals, batteries and next-generation mobility. They also adopted joint declarations on economic security and artificial intelligence, while agreeing to deepen cooperation in defence, energy resilience and strategic technologies.
