IPCR Condemns Benue Killings, Demands Justice for Otukpo Victims

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has condemned the recent killings in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, describing the attacks as a grave assault on peace, security and national unity, while calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

In a statement issued on Monday by its Director-General, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Institute expressed deep concern over the attacks on the Otukpo-Nobi community in Okete District and Akpachi-Ugboju, where several people were reportedly killed.

The IPCR described the incidents as “senseless, tragic and unacceptable,” extending its condolences to the families of the victims, the Benue State Government and the affected communities.

According to the Institute, the recurring violence against rural communities highlights the urgent need for stronger security measures and more proactive conflict prevention strategies.

“The perpetrators of these heinous acts must not be allowed to escape justice. Holding those responsible accountable is essential to restoring public confidence, deterring future violence and reinforcing the rule of law,” the statement said.

The Institute urged security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation into the attacks, identify those behind the killings and ensure they are prosecuted in accordance with the law.

It also called on the Federal Government, the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve the protection of vulnerable communities and deepen collaboration with local stakeholders to forestall further attacks.

While appealing for calm, IPCR urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could support ongoing investigations and improve community safety.

The Institute reaffirmed its commitment to advancing dialogue, peaceful coexistence and sustainable conflict resolution across Nigeria, stressing that justice, accountability and collective action remain indispensable to achieving lasting peace.

The latest attack adds to a disturbing pattern of violence in Benue State, where recurring clashes and armed attacks on farming communities have claimed hundreds of lives in recent years, displaced thousands of residents and heightened concerns over rural security. The persistent insecurity has continued to fuel calls for stronger government intervention, improved intelligence-driven policing and long-term conflict resolution measures to address the underlying causes of violence in the state.

IPCR prayed for the peaceful repose of the victims, wished those injured a speedy recovery and asked God to grant the bereaved families the strength to bear their loss.
