The new supreme leader of Iran did not attend the funeral of his father, the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Three sons of the former Iranian leader prayed beside his coffin and those of four other family members on Sunday, but Mojtaba, the son who succeeded him, did not make an appearance.
There has still been no public sighting or image released of Mojtaba, said to have been injured in the US-Israeli attack that killed his father and the other family members in February.
Mojtaba Khamenei’s face was disfigured and he suffered a significant injury to one or both legs, people close to his inner circle told Reuters. One disappointed mourner said she had hoped to see the new supreme leader during the funeral events.
Thousands gathered the streets of Tehran to mourn the former leader. US president Donald Trump said that he was surprised to see so many gather, boasting that just “one shot” could take out all the regime’s leaders who’ve assembled at the funeral.
“They are all there. One shot and we can take them all out, but we are not going to do that because then we would have nobody to negotiate with,” Trump told Axios yesterday.
