James David Van Der Beek (March 8, 1977 – February 11, 2026) was an American actor. He was best known for playing Dawson Leery on The WB’s Dawson’s Creek (1998–2003). He also played a version of himself on the ABC sitcom Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 (2012–2013), starred as FBI agent Elijah Mundo on CSI: Cyber (2015–2016), and appeared as Matt Bromley in the first season of the FX drama Pose (2018).
Van Der Beek appeared in several films, including Varsity Blues (1999), Texas Rangers (2001), The Rules of Attraction (2002), Formosa Betrayed (2009), Labor Day (2013), and Bad Hair (2020).

Early Life & Biography
James Van Der Beek was born in Cheshire, Connecticut, on March 8, 1977. He is the son of Melinda and James Van Der Beek. Melinda is a former dancer, and gymnastics teacher, and James is a cellular phone executive and former baseball pitcher. He is of Dutch ancestry.
When he was 15, he moved to New York City so that he can get an agent and try out in professional acting. He made is debut in Broadway in 1993 at the age of 16. When he was 17, he attended high school at Cheshire Academy. He participated in an all-male acapella group when he attended Drew University. He attended that university on an academic scholarship but later dropped out to pursue acting.

James Van Der Beek is best known for his performance in Dawson’s Creek as Dawson Leery. James started his career in 1997 when he auditioned for three TV shows. That is when he got to play the character of Dawson Leery. Then in 1999, he was featured in Varsity Blues. During this time, he also won an MTV Movie Award. He then starred in films such as “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back,” “Texas Rangers,” and “Scary Movie.” He appeared in the series “Criminal Minds” in 2007 as a serial killer. In 2008, he guest-starred in “How I Met Your Mother,” playing the role of Simon. He portrayed the role of Toppa Zappa in the 2009 film “Taken in Broad Daylight.”
