Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo (born March 16, 1988) is an American R&B singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. She began her music career in 2002 as a backing vocalist and appeared in music videos for the R&B group B2K. That same year, she signed with their record label, The Ultimate Group, and was promoted as the “cousin” of B2K member Lil’ Fizz to help build her own fan base, even though they are not actually related. Her debut album was planned for release in 2003 through the label and Epic Records, but it was put on hold so she could focus on her education.
Aiko returned to music in March 2011 with her first full-length project, a mixtape called Sailing Soul(s). Later that year, she signed a recording contract with producer No I.D.’s label, ARTium Recordings, which is part of Def Jam Recordings. She became more widely known in 2013 after appearing with Lil Wayne on Big Sean’s single “Beware.” This song was her first to enter the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 40. In November 2013, she released her debut EP, Sail Out, which included the singles “3:16 AM,” “Bed Peace” (featuring Childish Gambino), and “The Worst.” “The Worst” was later certified quintuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
