A tragic boat accident has plunged Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State into mourning, after a passenger boat carrying about 40 people capsized on the Malamawa River, leaving six people d£ad, 25 others missing, and nine rescued.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, happened while the boat was ferrying passengers across the Malamawa River, a waterway reported to be less than 30 metres wide.
The disaster has once again raised concerns over the safety of inland water transportation and the enforcement of basic safety measures in riverine communities.
According to residents, nine passengers were rescued alive shortly after the boat overturned, while six bodies have so far been recovered.
Search and rescue operations involving emergency responders and local volunteers are continuing as efforts intensify to locate those still missing.
The tragedy prompted an immediate response from Governor Umar Namadi, who visited the affected community to commiserate with grieving families and traditional leaders.
During the visit, the governor joined residents in observing funeral prayers for four of the six victims already recovered.
Governor Namadi extended his condolences to the Emir of Ringim, the bereaved families, and the people of Ringim Local Government Area, describing the incident as heartbreaking.
He assured residents that the Jigawa State Government would take decisive steps to reduce the risk of similar accidents, including strengthening safety measures on the state’s inland waterways.
The latest mishap adds to growing concerns over recurring boat accidents in parts of northern Nigeria, where many rural communities depend on waterways for daily transportation.
Poor safety practices, overcrowding and inadequate water transport infrastructure continue to contribute to fatal incidents despite repeated calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations.
As rescue operations continue on the Malamawa River, families of the missing passengers remain hopeful that more survivors will be found, while the community mourns those who lost their lives in one of the state’s latest boating tragedies.
