JUST IN: 68 passengers escape death as Enugu Airlines plane crash-lands at Benin Airport

An Enugu Airlines aircraft carrying 68 passengers was involved in a runway accident at Benin Airport, Edo State, on Thursday, with everyone on board escaping unharmed.

The aircraft, identified by registration number 5N-ENR, was operating a scheduled Enugu-Benin-Lagos service when the incident occurred after landing.

Besides the 68 passengers, the plane also had an undisclosed number of crew members on board.

Plane veers off runway

Airport sources said the aircraft failed to remain on the runway and eventually came to a stop in a bushy area close to the airport.

A source familiar with the incident, who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly, said emergency procedures were activated immediately after the aircraft left the runway.

Officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) responded promptly and safely evacuated every passenger from the aircraft.

No injuries reported

The source confirmed that no deaths or injuries were recorded despite the frightening incident. However, the exact number of crew members on the flight has not been disclosed.

Authorities have yet to announce the cause of the runway excursion. Aviation officials are expected to investigate the incident to determine what led to the aircraft leaving the runway.
