Kebbi Governor Inaugurates New State Varsity Governing Council After Leadership Shake-Up

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, on Friday inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Council of the Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology (AFUSTA), Aliero, at a ceremony in Birnin Kebbi.

The inauguration follows a major restructuring at the institution, which saw the removal of the vice chancellor, two deputy vice chancellors, other members of the management team, and the dissolution of the previous governing council.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Idris said the decision was necessary to restore stability and reposition the university for sustainable growth.

“The inauguration comes after the crisis that erupted in the university, which led to the removal of the Vice Chancellor, two Deputy Vice Chancellors, other management officials, and the dissolution of the Governing Council,” the Governor said.

He explained that the new Council members, including the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Muhammad Kaoje, were appointed based on their competence, integrity, and proven track records.

Governor Idris described AFUSTA as Kebbi State’s pioneer university and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting its growth and development.

“As a government, we must do everything possible to support the university because it is our pioneer state-owned university. Considering the experience and achievements of the members, I have no doubt they will successfully rebuild and reposition the institution to the expected standard,” he said.

The Governor noted that Kaoje’s experience as the institution’s pioneer Vice Chancellor would be invaluable in driving the university’s reforms.

“Professor Muhammad Abubakar Kaoje understands the university better than most, having served as its pioneer Vice Chancellor. My administration will continue to support the Council, and my doors remain open to address the university’s needs,” he added.

Governor Idris urged the Council to work closely with the Acting Vice Chancellor, Mungadi, and the management team to improve governance, strengthen academic standards, and enhance staff welfare.

He charged the members to discharge their responsibilities with dedication and ensure AFUSTA becomes one of Nigeria’s leading universities before formally inaugurating the Council.

Responding on behalf of the Council, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Professor Muhammad Abubakar Kaoje, thanked Governor Idris for the confidence reposed in them and pledged to justify the trust.

“I am pleased with the calibre of members appointed to this Council. I have worked with some of them before, including the Governor, and I am confident that together we will achieve the desired goals, by the grace of God,” he said.

Professor Kaoje also assured the Governor that the Council would maintain close engagement with the state government to advance the university’s development.

Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida, presented the Council members to the Governor, saying they were selected from diverse professional backgrounds to ensure broad stakeholder representation in the affairs of the university.
