Nigeria’s Kamaru Usman faces Du Plessis in UFC showdown

Nigeria’s Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Champion, Kamaru Usman, professionally known as The Nigerian Nightmare, is set to take on South Africa’s Dricus “Stillknocks” Du Plessis in a major contest of the Ultimate Fighting Champions (UFC).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the highly anticipated middleweight main event comes up at the UFC Fight Night.

It will be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States of America.

It would be brought live to viewers in Nigeria and the rest of the continent by SuperSport broadcasts in English, Pidgin, and Afrikaans.

The pidgin commentary option forms part of SuperSport’s multilingual coverage, giving Nigerian viewers the opportunity to follow one of Africa’s biggest UFC matchup in a language familiar to them.

According to Rendani Ramovha, CANAL+ Director for Content and Sports in English and Portuguese-speaking Africa, who spoke in an interview on Thursday in Lagos, the coming event represents more than a fight for UFC.

Ramovha said that when South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis stepped into the Octagon against Nigeria’s Kamaru Usman, it would be more than a headline.

He said that it would be a celebration of African excellence on the global stage.

He said: “By once again offering Pidgin commentary alongside our English and Afrikaans coverage, we’re giving Nigerian fans another exciting way to experience one of the biggest fights in African combat sports history.

“At SuperSport, we’re committed to making world-class sport more accessible, engaging and relevant to audiences across the continent.”

Ramovha added that it is a meeting of two of Africa’s greatest mixed martial artists, two former world champions, and two athletes carrying the hopes of their nations.

He said: “For decades, sporting contests between Nigeria and South Africa have produced unforgettable moments, passionate debate, and fierce competition.

“This weekend, that rivalry moves into the Octagon as the two African stars battle for pride, supremacy, redemption, and another shot at UFC gold.”

NAN reports that Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) returns to action after an 11-month absence following the loss of his middleweight title to Khamzat Chimaev.

He will be eager to restart his title pursuit with a statement victory.

Incidentally, Du Plessis had defeated Nigeria’s Israel Adesanya, professionally known as The Last Stylebender, through fourth-round submission (rear-naked choke) in their monumental grudge match at UFC 305 in Perth, Australia in 2024.

The classic clash of styles saw Du Plessis weaponise his chaotic pressure and grappling to overcome the elite kickboxing of the former champion.

In all analysis, Usman should be aware of Du Plessis’s bravery and artistry when he steps into the Octagon.

Usman (21-4 MMA), (16-3 UFC), widely regarded as one of the greatest welterweight champions in UFC history, is now making a permanent move to the middleweight division,

The Nigerian has an opportunity to establish himself as an immediate contender in a second weight class and would not want a repeat of what happened to Adesanya.

The matchup indeed promises an intriguing clash of styles, with Du Plessis’ relentless forward pressure and knockout power set against Usman’s elite wrestling, disciplined striking, and championship experience.

The action-packed undercard will also feature Kevin Holland against undefeated prospect Jacobe Smith.

Similarly, featherweight contenders Austin Bashi and Jose Delgado will also clash, while unbeaten prospect Tommy McMillen will square up with Alberto Montes.

There will also be a women’s straw weight contest between Tabatha Ricci and Fatima Kline, alongside several other exciting bouts.
