The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has clarified that no decision has been reached to replace the current National Youth Service Corps, NYSC uniform, following reports that suggested Adire fabric had been adopted.
The minister made this revelation in a statement on Thursday.
Olawande clarified that his remarks during an Television broadcast were misunderstood.
“After my brief appearance earlier this morning online, my attention has been drawn to some media reports regarding the ongoing reforms of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), particularly on the issue of the proposed uniform,” he stated.
“Yes, I brought up Adire during the conversation, just to be clear. I brought up Ankara as well.
I just wanted to give some instances of some of the suggestions that have been made during our meetings.
It was not a declaration that a specific fabric will take the place of the current NYSC uniform.
“For the record, what we are considering are different options that tick all the right boxes in terms of professional outlook, a unique national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the projection of national pride.
Regarding the fabric and design, no final decision has been made.
“As with other aspects of the ongoing NYSC reforms, any final decision will be based on wide stakeholder input and what is best for the Scheme and the nation.
“I humbly urge Nigerians to continue to join in the ongoing NYSC reform conversation based on its broader aims and the enormous advantages it will bring to our young people and our country.
“The modifications are intended to make the Scheme more relevant to today’s circumstances by increasing employability, encouraging entrepreneurship, deepening national integration, improving service delivery, and facilitating the transition from education to productive professions.
“While discussions about the uniform are natural, they should not overshadow the comprehensive reforms intended at empowering millions of Nigerian youths and presenting the NYSC as a better platform for national development.
“I appreciate the constructive feedback and assure Nigerians that every proposal will continue to be carefully considered in the best interest of the nation.”
