The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a stolen motorcycle following a swift operation in Ibadan.

Police said the suspect, identified as Shafiu Nuhu, was arrested after allegedly attacking a commercial motorcyclist, Muhammadu Kamilu, with an iron hammer and making away with his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle along Adeniji Estate, Apata, on July 16.

According to the police, operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) acted on credible information from a member of the public, leading to the suspect’s arrest and the recovery of the stolen motorcycle, bearing registration number AJW 842 QU, as well as the alleged weapon used in the attack.

The victim sustained injuries during the incident, while a passer-by, Nathaniel Ibrahim, was also injured after attempting to rescue him.

Both men were taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said the suspect confessed during interrogation to operating as a lone robber targeting commercial motorcyclists in Ibadan and surrounding areas.

Investigations are ongoing to determine his possible involvement in other robberies.

Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga commended the good Samaritan and members of the public whose timely information aided the arrest, urging residents to continue supporting the police with credible intelligence to tackle crime in the state.
