Police Constable Shoots Inspector After Duty Clash

A police inspector is receiving treatment for severe facial injuries after he was allegedly shot at close range by a fellow officer following a dispute at the Iju Police Division in Lagos.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident occurred at about 9 a.m. on Sunday shortly after Inspector Aminu Nuhu completed his night station guard duty and was handing over to Police Constable Lateef Afeez, who had resumed for the morning shift.

According to an internal police signal, the officers engaged in a heated argument during the handover, which reportedly escalated when the inspector allegedly threw stones at the constable.

The constable was said to have retaliated by firing a riot gun issued to him for guard duty, hitting the inspector in the face at close range.

The victim sustained grievous injuries to his mouth and right cheek.

He was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Ifako, for emergency treatment before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, due to the severity of his injuries.

Police authorities subsequently arrested and disarmed the constable, who is currently being held in custody.

The matter is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, after preliminary investigations for further probe.

An internal police signal detailing the incident read in part, “Today, July 12, 2026, at about 0900 hours, Inspector Aminu Nuhu, who had just completed night station guard duty, had an altercation with Police Constable Lateef Afeez, who had resumed for morning station guard duty.

“The altercation led to the inspector stoning the constable. Subsequently, the constable retaliated by firing the riot gun he had booked for duty directly at the inspector’s face at close range.

“As a result of the shooting, the inspector sustained grievous injuries to his mouth and right cheek region. He was rushed to General Hospital, Ifako, and later referred to LASUTH, Ikeja, for further medical attention.”

The signal added that the constable had been arrested, disarmed and placed in detention, while the case would be transferred to the SCID for a discreet investigation.
