The Enugu State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the driver and conductor of a Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus following an incident that occurred on July 9 at All Saints Roundabout, Abakaliki Road, Enugu.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly assaulted a traffic officer before operatives of the Distress Response Squad intercepted the vehicle. Rather than surrender, the driver reportedly accelerated, knocked down one of the officers and dragged away the officer’s AK-47 rifle after it became entangled with the vehicle.
Police said the suspects later threw the rifle out of the vehicle near IMT Bus Stop while fleeing. The firearm was recovered intact with its ammunition.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa has ordered a full investigation and directed officers to intensify efforts to arrest the fleeing suspects. He also urged the public to ignore misleading accounts of the incident and warned that anyone who assaults or obstructs police officers carrying out their lawful duties will face prosecution.
