The Publisher of Akelicious Media, Godwin Offor, has called on the Federal Government to address what he described as the growing abuse and disregard for the Nigerian naira by top government officials and celebrities.
In a statement, Offor argued that the country’s leaders should be promoting the naira instead of publicly displaying and prioritising foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar.
He questioned the increasing use of dollars in Nigerian movies, saying Nollywood productions should project the country’s national currency rather than portray the dollar as the preferred means of exchange.
“How can Nigerian Nollywood be using dollars in movies instead of the naira? Using the dollar sends a message that the naira has no value in our own country,” he said.
Offor also criticised the widespread display and circulation of dollars during political campaigns and election seasons, describing the trend as alarming. According to him, political leaders should lead by example by conducting public activities with the naira rather than showcasing foreign currencies on national television.
He further noted that foreign films rarely feature the naira as a primary currency and questioned why Nigerian productions and politicians continue to give prominence to the US dollar.
Offor maintained that if Nigeria is serious about strengthening the value and image of the naira, those in positions of influence must demonstrate confidence in the country’s currency through their actions and public appearances.
