Residents of Independence Layout in Enugu have renewed calls on Governor Peter Mbah to intervene in the long-abandoned reconstruction of Awgu Street, one of the major roads serving the eastern part of the estate.
The road, which stretches from its junction with Ozubulu Road through Mbaukwu Street and links up with Umuagu Junction, has reportedly remained in poor condition for years despite its strategic importance to residents and motorists.
According to residents, work on the road commenced during the administration of former Governor Sullivan Chime. They said preliminary stages of the project, including surveys, engineering designs, site clearance, and road pegging, were completed before the reconstruction was abandoned.
Although residents had hoped subsequent administrations would revive the project, the road has remained unfinished.
They noted that under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, nearby roads including Ozubulu Road and Nwadison Road have been rehabilitated, raising expectations that Awgu Street would also receive attention.
Residents said those expectations grew stronger when heaps of stone chippings were deposited along sections of the road several months ago, suggesting that construction work was imminent.
However, they lamented that no further activity has taken place since then. Instead, they claim the abandoned construction materials have contributed to worsening erosion in parts of the road, making it increasingly difficult for motorists and pedestrians to navigate, particularly during the rainy season.
A resident who shared a video of the road’s current condition urged members of the New Era community and other stakeholders to unite in advocating for the completion of the project.
The resident appealed to the Enugu State Government to prioritise the reconstruction of Awgu Street, describing it as a critical road that deserves urgent intervention due to its importance to the surrounding neighbourhoods.
