Manchester City midfielder Rodri’s dream of returning to Spain has hit a major obstacle after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez reportedly ruled out a move for the Ballon d’Or winner.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Rodri has been keen on joining the Spanish giants for several months, having previously played for Atletico Madrid before moving to the Premier League.
However, Perez is said to have no interest in pursuing the Spain international, effectively ending any possibility of negotiations between the two clubs this summer.
The development comes as new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho begins preparations for the new season, with Rodri not expected to be part of the Portuguese coach’s plans.
Rodri keen on Spain return
Romano revealed that the 30-year-old has long admired the prospect of wearing the Real Madrid shirt, although the club’s hierarchy does not share the same view.
“Rodri would love a return to Spain and dreams of Real Madrid, clear since months,” Romano posted on X.
“At same time, Florentino Pérez has always blocked this deal or any negotiations for Rodri this summer.”
Man City push for new contract
With Real Madrid unlikely to make a move, Manchester City are working to secure Rodri’s long-term future.
The Premier League club have reportedly had a new contract offer on the table since April as they seek to keep one of their most influential players beyond the expiry of his current deal next summer.
Romano added:
“Man City new contract proposal, on the table since April.”
Rodri has been a key figure for City since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2019, helping the club win multiple Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League and several domestic trophies.
Despite reported interest from Spain, Manchester City remain hopeful the midfielder will commit his future to the club by signing fresh terms.
