Two persons were killed in a fatal road crash on Thursday morning after a commercial bus collided with a truck and burst into flames at Ogbere Junction along the Ogbere–J4 corridor in Ogun State.
Available information indicated that four adult males were involved in the vehicle crash.
Two of them died on the spot, while the other two escaped entirely unhurt.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, confirmed that the accident occurred at about 5:10 a.m. on Thursday.
According to the Sector Command, the crash involved a white Mack truck with registration number ABC660XC and an orange Peugeot J5 bus with no visible registration number.
The Corps attributed the crash to route violation and excessive speeding, noting that the impact of the collision caused the Peugeot J5 bus to burst into flames, leaving its front section completely burnt.
“The probable causes of the crash were route violation (RTV) and speed violation (SPV).
“The impact of the collision led to the Peugeot J5 bus catching fire, with its front section completely burnt,” the statement said.
The Command also stated that its rescue team arrived at the crash scene within two minutes of receiving the distress call and immediately commenced traffic control to minimise disruption to motorists.
“FRSC rescue personnel arrived at the scene within two minutes of being notified and immediately commenced traffic management.
“The affected lane was diverted to the alternative carriageway while efforts continued to remove the wreckage and restore free flow of traffic,” the statement added.
The remains of the deceased victims were evacuated by officers of the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Ogbere Division, and deposited at a mortuary.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and urged motorists to comply strictly with traffic regulations.
He warned against speeding and route violations, particularly during periods of poor visibility and on wet roads.
“Drivers must avoid speeding and route violations, especially during periods of poor visibility and on wet road surfaces.
“These dangerous driving behaviours remain major causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian roads,” Ogunjobi said.
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to reducing road traffic crashes through sustained enforcement, public enlightenment campaigns and prompt emergency response.
The Command also advised motorists to drive responsibly, observe speed limits and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
