World Cup: Again Bellingham brace fires England past Norway

Jude Bellingham scored a second successive knockout-stage brace as England came from behind to defeat Norway 2-1 after extra time and book their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Real Madrid midfielder struck once in first-half stoppage time before netting the winner in extra time to send the Three Lions into the last four, where they will face either Argentina or Switzerland.

The brace came just days after Bellingham scored twice in England’s 3-2 Round of 16 victory over co-hosts Mexico.

England dominated possession early but struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Bellingham heading wide from an Elliot Anderson cross before Harry Kane fired a free-kick over the crossbar.

Norway gradually grew into the contest and took the lead after Andreas Schjelderup’s cross drifted over Jordan Pickford and into the net.

The goal lifted Norway, who nearly doubled their advantage through Alexander Sorloth and Martin Odegaard before England struck back on the stroke of half-time.

Anthony Gordon found Bellingham with a square pass, and the midfielder burst into the penalty area before calmly finishing past Orjan Nyland for his fifth goal of the tournament.

Pickford endured a busy second half, producing important saves to deny Sorloth and Erling Haaland before Norway had a goal ruled out following a VAR review for a foul by Haaland on Anderson in the build-up.

Kristoffer Ajer also struck the crossbar as Norway continued to threaten from set-pieces.

England finished normal time strongly, with Bukayo Saka and Djed Spence both going close before the contest moved into extra time.

Kane tested Nyland early in the additional period, but the Norwegian goalkeeper could only parry Morgan Rogers’ effort into the path of Bellingham, who reacted quickest to score his sixth goal of the tournament.

England were later denied a penalty after VAR overturned the referee’s initial decision following an incident involving Spence.

Norway suffered another setback when Haaland was forced off with a suspected injury during extra time.

Nyland kept Norway in the contest with a superb double save to deny Spence and Saka, but England held firm to secure victory.

The result sent England into their first FIFA World Cup semi-final outside Europe and only their fourth World Cup semi-final overall, while bringing Norway’s historic tournament run to an end.

Thomas Tuchel’s side will now face the winner of Sunday’s quarter-final between Argentina and Switzerland for a spot in the World Cup final.
