World Cup: Morocco goalie equals all-time penalty save record

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou equalled the all-time FIFA World Cup record for penalty saves after denying France captain Kylian Mbappé from the spot during their quarter-final clash.

The 25th-minute save was Bounou’s fourth successful penalty stop in World Cup history, drawing him level with Harald Schumacher, Sergio Goycochea, Danijel Subašić and Dominik Livaković for the most tournament penalty saves since Opta began tracking the statistic in 1966.

Bounou first showcased his penalty-saving ability at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he denied Spain’s Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets during Morocco’s Round of 16 penalty shootout victory.

He added a third save at the 2026 tournament by stopping Crysencio Summerville’s effort in the Round of 32 penalty shootout against the Netherlands before denying Mbappé from the spot against France.

Across his World Cup career, Bounou has faced nine penalties, saving four, conceding two and seeing three efforts miss the target.

The Moroccan international also holds the record for forcing the most failed penalties against a single goalkeeper in FIFA World Cup shootout history, with six opposition attempts either saved or missed.

Although Morocco’s journey ended in the quarter-finals, Bounou’s latest save further strengthened his reputation as one of the tournament’s finest penalty specialists.
