2027: 2 prominent ministers resign

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned his position. Tuggar stepped down his appointment to pursue his political ambition ofning run for the governorship of Bauchi state.

Ambassador Tuggar’s resignation was disclosed on Monday in a brief statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, just as the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Yusuf Tanko Sununu, also hanged the booth.

According to Ebienfa’s statement,, “The resignation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed.”

Tuggar, who hails from Udubo in Gamawa local government Area of Bauchi state, contested for the governorship of Bauchi state in 2015 but could not make head way.

…Tanko Sununu

In a related development, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yusuf Tanko Sununu, resigned on Monday to pursue a political career in Kebbi state.

Confirming his resignation, Sununu said he stepped down in line with the country’s rules for political office seekers.

Tanko Sununu, a former federal lawmaker, represented Shanga, Yauri, and Ngaski federal Constituency, is reportedly planning to contest for the Kebbi South senatorial district seat in the 2027 elections.

The outgone minister previously served as Minister of State for Education before being redeployed to the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry.

Tinubu’s order

President Bola Tinubu had recentlydirected all political appointees in his administration who plan to contest any elective office in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive was communicated through an official circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.

The directive covers all categories of presidential appointees, including Ministers, Ministers of State, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, Personal Assistants to the President, as well as Directors-General and Chief Executive Officers of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions, and government-owned companies.

Blueprint gathered that, at least six ministers were on their way to beating the March 31 deadline, prompting a source to say: “More resignations are expected by Tuesday, March 31st.”
