12 killed as truck tumbles on Edo road

The Edo state command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a fatal road accident in which 12 persons lost their lives and 14 others sustained injuries along the Auchi–Ewu–Benin road.

Blueprint.ng gathered that the accident occurred at Egono community when a truck conveying goods and passengers reportedly skidded off the road and tumbled.

The truck, said to be heading towards Benin City, was reportedly involved in a wrongful overtaking manoeuvre at high speed when the crash occurred.

About 37 passengers were said to be onboard at the time of the accident.

The fatal crash reportedly claimed 12 lives on the spot, while 14 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Spokesperson for the FRSC in Edo state, Patricia Onwochei, attributed the accident to wrongful overtaking.

She explained that the impact of the crash was severe due to excessive speed combined with the vehicle’s mixed load of passengers and goods.

Onwochei added that one of the deceased had been buried, while 11 bodies were deposited at a mortuary.
