The Kaduna state chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned what it described as the sustained persecution and harassment of Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai and other opposition leaders in the state.
The party, in a statement read by Professor Sani Bello Mainan Zazzau, a former commissioner for local government, on Tuesday in Kaduna, said recent developments point to a pattern of politically motivated actions, abuse of state institutions and disregard for due process.
The ADC alleged that actions taken against El-Rufai, including what it termed a ministerial snub and proceedings by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, were aimed at undermining his political standing.
It also decried the arrest and continued detention of some associates of the former governor, including Bashir Saidu, Ja’afar Ibrahim Sani and Jimmy Lawal, describing the move as part of a broader attempt to intimidate opposition figures.
The party further raised concerns over the alleged misuse of security and anti-corruption agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and the Department of State Services.
According to the ADC, the agencies have yet to establish credible evidence against El-Rufai but continue to subject him and his associates to legal and procedural pressure.
The statement also alleged prolonged detention under harsh conditions, inconsistent bail arrangements and repeated transfers between Abuja and Kaduna, which it said violate fundamental human rights and due process.
The party said the clampdown extends beyond individuals to opposition activities across the 23 local government areas of Kaduna State, citing alleged intimidation by security operatives and interference in party structures.
While criticising the development, the ADC said residents of the state are facing worsening socio-economic conditions, including insecurity, rising cost of living, unemployment and declining healthcare services.
The party called for an immediate end to what it described as harassment and politically motivated prosecutions, urging authorities to respect the rule of law and ensure fair legal processes.
It also demanded the release of individuals it claimed were unlawfully detained or, alternatively, the conduct of transparent trials.
The ADC urged relevant authorities, civil society organisations and the international community to intervene in order to safeguard democratic principles and the rule of law.
