Former Sokoto State Governor and serving senator, Aminu Tambuwal, has urged the judiciary to uphold its integrity and resist any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
Tambuwal made the call on Tuesday while speaking at the national convention of the African Democratic Congress in Abuja.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives warned that history would judge the actions of individuals in positions of authority, especially within key institutions.
“We are in a critical period in Nigeria where those who claim to be democrats are revealing their true nature,” he said.
Addressing members of the judiciary, Tambuwal cautioned against allowing themselves to be used to damage the country, referencing past events such as the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
He stressed that judicial officers must remain independent and avoid external influence that could compromise the justice system and democratic process.
“Let no judge allow himself to be used to destroy Nigeria. History is recording our actions, and future generations are watching,” he said.
Tambuwal also reminded those in positions of authority to act with accountability, noting that their decisions carry lasting consequences.
He warned judges to be mindful of pressures from individuals seeking to influence rulings, adding that ultimate judgment rests with God.
