Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has reacted to growing calls from supporters urging him to contest in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in response to a group appealing to him to return to active politics, Jonathan said the presidency is a serious responsibility that cannot be approached casually.

“You ask me to come and contest the next election. The presidential race is not a computer game, but I have heard you, and I will consult widely,” he said.

His statement has since sparked widespread reactions online, with Nigerians expressing different opinions about the possibility of his return to the political scene.

Some social media users suggested that Jonathan’s entry into the race could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027.

@citykush1 wrote, “Join the race, build strong support across the SS, step down closer to the election and direct supporters to rally behind PBAT.”

Another user, @Pharoukhu, speculated that Jonathan’s participation could affect opposition strength, saying, “If GEJ contest, he’s just doing it to split opposition votes.”

Others advised the former president to maintain his elder statesman status instead of returning to active politics.

@Sanchyoloye commented, “If I were Jonathan, I wouldn’t listen to anyone. I’d rather remain an elder statesman and continue enjoying my accolades and respect.”

Meanwhile, @AdetunjiAdewolu joked about the nature of Nigerian politics, writing, “Nigerian politicians never really retire… they just enter ‘consult widely’ mode.”
