Airtel Nigeria has temporarily suspended its airtime and data credit borrowing services in compliance with a new directive from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

The announcement was made by Mr. Ismail Adeshina, Airtel Nigeria’s Director of Marketing, in a statement released on Friday in Lagos.

The company’s Director of Marketing, Mr Ismail Adeshina, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Lagos.

TheLeader reports that the FCCPC’s Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025, establishes a compliance and licensing structure for firms providing digital or non-traditional consumer credit services in Nigeria.

According to Adeshina, the suspended services had enabled qualified prepaid subscribers to access airtime or data on credit, with repayment made during their next recharge.

He clarified, however, that customers will continue to have seamless access to airtime and data purchases through Airtel’s existing platforms.

Adeshina noted that the temporary suspension is not expected to significantly affect overall service delivery nationwide.

“This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving regulatory requirements.

“Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” he said.
