Sevilla forward Akor Adams has called for immediate long-term planning as Nigeria chases a return to the biggest stage in world football following consecutive qualification failures.

The striker said the time for reflection had passed and insisted preparations must begin now if the Super Eagles are to secure a place at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria missed the FIFA World Cup 2022 after a painful playoff defeat to Ghana. Hopes of a quick return were dashed again last November when Eric Chelle’s side fell to DR Congo on penalties in the African playoff final, ruling them out of the 2026 finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Adams believes another failure would have serious consequences for the country’s football reputation and morale.

“The players as well, we are motivated to see that we don’t disappoint ourselves and Nigerians for the third time,” he said.

“Because I think that would take a very big toll on Nigerian football.

“The preparation starts now. It starts every day leading up to the World Cup 2030.

“We look forward to it, and we try to rewrite the story.”

The 24-year-old, who plays his club football for Sevilla FC, said the squad must adopt a new mindset built on consistency, unity and early planning. He stressed that qualifying for the next World Cup cannot be left to late surges or short-term fixes.
