The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims that its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, endorsed a partisan post on the social media platform X, describing the allegation as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, the commission said the report formed part of what it described as a “malicious and coordinated campaign” aimed at discrediting the electoral body.

INEC clarified that the chairman does not operate any personal account on X and has never engaged in partisan commentary or political endorsement.

The commission further described the alleged post as a deliberate attempt to undermine the credibility and neutrality of the chairman at a critical time.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the INEC Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X.

He has at no time engaged in partisan commentary, nor has he ever associated himself with any political leaning or activity in his private or public capacity,” the statement said.

INEC also raised concerns about cybercriminals allegedly using fake social media accounts bearing the chairman’s name to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

According to the commission, several fake accounts have already been identified and reported to security agencies, with efforts ongoing to track down those responsible.

The commission warned that identity theft and the spread of forged social media content constitute criminal offences under the Cybercrimes Act, adding that those behind such activities would face prosecution.

INEC urged members of the public to disregard the false claim and rely only on verified institutional channels for official information.

The electoral body also reaffirmed its commitment to delivering credible elections and maintaining public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.
